Climate changed, climate changes – not only itself and its patterns, but also societies, policies and individuals. A reset is not possible, because the mechanisms of climate change have been set in motion – this century will be about mitigation and adaptation. A task not only for individuals, but also for societies and businesses. Incorporating sustainability into our daily lives and thinking is not just a choice, it must be an integral part. As one of Scandinavia’s largest book publishing group, Bonnier Books has worked decisively on this integration and taken responsibility by setting out a long-term path to mitigate climate change and adapt to its effects.
Three years were set as milestones: 2025, 2030, 2040. Based on 2019, the goal is to reduce our emissions by 25% until 2025, by 50% (Scope 3) respectively 55% (Scope 1 & 2) until 2030, and by 90% until 2040.
These targets were also validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, which helps companies reduce their emissions through science-based pathways.
In the production of our titles, low emission materials, ambitious suppliers, renewable electricity and a shift in transport and our travel policies will be key to reach our targets.
Renewable energy plays a key role in reducing emissions, and we are committed to using 100% renewable electricity in all our offices by 2027. By the same year, 90% of our book production will be powered by renewable electricity. We prioritize solutions like on-site solar panels or direct contracts between printers and energy providers. When these are not feasible, we also accept Energy Attribute Certificates, which ensure renewable energy is added to the grid. To guide our choices, we rely on the globally recognized RE100 standards for defining credible renewable electricity sourcing.
Emission compensation is taking a back seat to increased investment in reducing emissions – a shift from paying for what has been done to increase investing in what needs to be done. Click here if you are interested in which compensation projects have been supported by us beforehand.
